Whenever I visit schools to speak, I’m struck by the faces of the people filing into the audience. Each one—no matter how young or old—holds a story. Some faces light up with curiosity; others carry the weight of untold struggles or quiet determination. But one thing is clear: every face is a narrative waiting to be shared.
As an author, my message is simple yet extremely important: Don’t let anyone tell your story.
In a world that often pressures us to conform, where the political discourse surrounding individual rights can be scary, staying true to yourself can feel like an act of rebellion. But your story matters. Your experiences, your voice, and your truth are valuable threads in the fabric of humanity. When you take ownership of your story, you shape not just your life but also the lives of those who hear you.
Why Owning Your Narrative Matters
Personal storytelling is one of the most powerful tools for self-discovery and connection. It’s how we make sense of our journey and share our truths with the world. Yet, too often, we let others define who we are. Whether it’s societal expectations, peer pressure, or even the good intentions of loved ones, these external voices can drown out our own.
But here’s the truth: your narrative belongs to you. No one else can capture the nuances of your experience or the depth of your dreams.
How to Take Control of Your Story
Acknowledge Your Unique Experiences - Every moment—good or bad—shapes your journey. Embrace the lessons from your past, but don’t let them define your future.
Find Your Medium - Whether it’s writing, speaking, painting, or even quiet reflection, discover the best way to express your truth. Your story doesn’t have to be shared in traditional ways to have value.
Block Out the Noise - It’s easy to let the opinions of others steer your narrative, but true freedom comes when you tune into your inner voice.
Share to Empower - When you tell your story authentically, you give others the courage to do the same. Your truth could be the light someone else needs to find their own.
Why Your Story Matters
Each of us is the author of our lives, with the power to shape how our story unfolds. Personal storytelling not only fosters self-awareness but also creates connections with others. When you share your story, you remind those around you that they’re not alone—that their experiences and voices matter too.
So the next time you look in the mirror or into the faces of those around you, remember this: every face is a story. And the world needs yours, told in your voice, on your terms.
I talk to students of all ages (and their teachers and parents!). Let me know if you'd like me to speak to your school or organization!
